What you can do...
Wear your safety belt and be sure that children are secured in child safety seats • Be a responsible host. Serve food and have non-alcoholic drinks available. Do not let your guests drive after drinking alcohol and never serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. Don't drink and drive and never ride in a car with anyone who has been drinking. Support MADD to eliminate drunk driving and victims' rights laws by contacting elected officials. Report drunk drivers immediately to law enforcement. • If you or someone you love becomes a victim of a drunk driving crash, call (760) 772-MADD. Get involved. Bill Creating Pilot Interlock Program in California Signed Into Law
MADD thanks the California State Legislature and Governor for dedication to public safty.
California took an impressive step towards eliminating drunk driving this week. After passing the California State Legislature, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Assembly Bill 91 into law.
Sponsored by Assemblyman Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles), AB 91 creates a pilot project in the counties of Alameda, Los Angeles, Tulare and Sacramento, and requires the installation of ignition interlock devices on any vehicle owned or operated by an individual convicted of a driving under the influence offense.
"MADD expresses its sincere appreciation to Assemblyman Feuer for his dedication to ushering this important bill through the Assembly," Laura Dean-Mooney. "This new law will save lives."
Eleven states now require or highly incentivize the use of ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, including first-time convicted offenders at .08 blood alcohol concentration (BAC). MADD believes that the results of the pilot program in California will confirm the findings in other states and warrant expansion of the program statewide.
